Scientific Discourse

What is Scientific Discourse?  How can you promote science discourse and why is it important?

One of the main goals of science learning is to help students make sense of scientific phenomena and ideas.  Rich discourse offers students ways to express their ideas, reasoning and thinking, but what does that look like in an elementary classroom?   For more information on scientific discourse check out the:

Asking questions and defining problems- Poster

PE- Asking Scientific Questions and Defining Problems in PE (Posters)

Looking for ways to integrate scientific questing with Physical Education?  This amazing poster, created by fifth grade teacher and Science Fellows emeritus, Heidi Yerrington, has several examples of questioning, observing, and defining problems, all aligned to the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) being graded in our Kindergarten-fifth grade classrooms. Looking for more ideas around integrating, check out the Observations and Wonderings, and Questions that Include Measures and Variables posters linked below.

Music-Do you Hear What I Hear?

 Music:

Using a 5E lesson model, students engage in collecting and analyzing data and applying that data when learning about pitch, frequency, loudness and amplitude, sound quality and timbre.  This short article outlines how students in one elementary school focused on sound (a first grade scope taught during 4th quarter) through science and music.  With connections to the music standards and the SEPs available.
